Raw herbs are the typical roots and barks and other materials that must be brewed. It is recommended that the herbs be brewed in non-metal pots because the metal, especially aluminum, may react with some substances present in the herbs.
General guidelines for brewing herbs are:
- Cover the herbs with water and soak for at least 30 minutes, depending on the types of herbs.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for about 30 minutes, again depending on the types of herbs in the formula.
- Drain the liquid through a strainer into a container big enough to hold about double the current amount of liquid.
- Add just enough water to cover the herbs and boil and simmer again.
- Drain this second batch through a strainer into the container with the first batch and divide to appropriate dosages according to instruction.
Some herbs need to be soaked and brewed for a longer or shorter time. Always pay attention to the instructions for the particular formula. Herbal tea can be easily absorbed and is considered the fastest acting remedy compared to the various pill, powder, and other forms in which herbs are distributed. It is also the easiest to customize according to the individual's needs.
